SCREEN TIME AND YOUR CHILD
HOW CAN YOUTH HAVE A HEALTHIER RELATIONSHIP WITH THEIR SCREENS?
We hear and read the negatives, as the volume gets turned up more and more – kids are spending too much time on their screens, and the potential adverse effects are too numerous to list.
Try to read behind the headlines and sensationalism. What we should be talking about is balance. And with kids, it all starts with good communication. Social media isn’t going anywhere. It’s here to stay. They aren’t going to just put their phones down. Tech isn’t going anywhere
So it’s time to put a plan together. With that in mind, we reached out to Dr. Michelle Ponti, chair of the Canadian Paediatric Society (CPS) Digital Health Task Force, for her thoughts about ways in which kids can have a healthier, more productive, relationship with their screens.
Here is what she said:
“The “4M” principles (from CPS position statement on screen time and young children, released June 1: minimize screen time, mitigate the risks associated with screen time, be mindful about the use of screen time, and adults should model healthy screen use), can be applied to any age. Highlight the use of a Family Media Plan so kids are involved in setting the limits and understanding screen rules and expectations. Generally, no more than two hours/day of recreational screen time corresponds to Canadian Sedentary Behaviour guidelines for children 5-17 years. No screens in the bedroom. Set “screen-free” zones such as dinner table. Start setting these screen limits as young/early as possible (ideally prenatally!) so families can develop healthy habits versus trying to cut back later on.”
