Allow only the apps your child needs at school while blocking those that distract is a good first step to enabled learning

Allow only the apps your child needs at school while blocking those that distract is a good first step to enabled learning.

We all know that children and teens spend way too many hours on their smartphones and tablets engaged in social media, streaming media and games. In fact, we as parents do as well. Furthermore, children are encouraged to BYOD to school as the cost for school boards to provide dedicated technology to students is absorbent.

Here in lies the problem. Your child brings their device to school for the purpose of enhanced or enabled learning, but it comes packed with all the apps they use in their leisure. It’s kind of like like the law of diminishing returns; only the benefits are now outweighed by the loss of educational opportunity and disruption in the classroom. This is a real issue, ask any teacher how this phenomenon has affected their classroom, and they will tell it to you straight.

Some schools have implemented no phone policies to battle the issue and have seen an overall improvement in the situation (good article from CBC). However in this day and age that thought process seems somewhat archaic. We shouldn’t be removing learning opportunities or tools from the hands of children; we should be disrupting the norm and creating solutions that transform smartphones and tablets into tools instead of distractions. This is the best way to achieve a cost-effective ecosystem that is supportive and dedicated to enabled learning.

redgreentree has created an app lets parents and caregivers create schedules based on a child’s routine and can limit the available apps on a per schedule basis. Not only is this very powerful but it has proven to be very effective as well. As a result of our Beta, Alpha and the newly released production version of the app, parents have seen positive improvements in their children. Not only are they more engaged at school but overall they seem to be more social and open to communication.
